Drum roll, please! We are very excited to share the results of a feasibility study for incorporating the Erie Canalway Trail into the historical Erie Canal Corridor linking DeWitt and Syracuse:
So, how did we get here? The Town of DeWitt hired ALTA Planning + Design and Environmental Design & Research (EDR) to study various design alternatives for the Elevating Erie corridor and complete a technical review of the traffic impacts of each strategy. The final report includes recommendations on both the short- and long-term prospects for the corridor. The results from the public survey (which we released in July) were the inspiration for the alternatives explored in the report.
What happens next, you ask? You may have heard of planning efforts at the State level to create the Empire State Trail proposed to span the breadth of New York's borders. The Elevating Erie corridor falls within the limits of the EST network and parts of this project will be included in the construction of the statewide system. The Elevating Erie Concept Plan very closely mirrors the scope and type of improvements currently being contemplated by the State. You can learn more about the plans for the EST through the draft EST Summary Report released on August 8, 2017.
The announcement of the Empire State Trail is exciting but only the beginning. Stay in touch, keep engaged, and help us bring the Elevating Erie vision to life!
